By Justina Amakili

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has initiated a comprehensive rice farming training program titled “Capacity Building On Commercial Scale Rice Production And Processing.” The training aimed at enhancing food security in the Niger Delta region.

Over 260 enthusiastic youths eager to learn sustainable agricultural practices have been attracted to agriculture as a result of the program. The initiative was designed to equip young farmers with the skills and resources necessary to improve rice production and contribute to the overall development of the agricultural sector in the region.

Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director and CEO of NDDC, underscored the significance of this initiative in increasing agricultural output within the region. He emphasized that empowering youths with modern farming techniques would play a crucial role in addressing food shortages and fostering economic growth. Highlighting the program’s potential to transform local farming practices, Dr. Ogbuku stated, “This initiative is essential for promoting high-yield agriculture and ensuring sustainable food security.” He further stressed that by leveraging advanced agricultural techniques and providing the necessary support to farmers, the program would help to reduce the region’s dependence on imported rice, thereby boosting local production and economic stability.

Also, Mr. Wale Oretan, representing Dr. Winifred Madume, the Deputy Director, NDDC, announced that more than 300 youths had already benefited from the rice production training. This underscored the NDDC’s commitment to ensuring that a significant number of young farmers gain access to essential knowledge and skills in commercial-scale rice farming. Participants were encouraged to share their newfound knowledge with fellow farmers, thereby amplifying the program’s impact of food security throughout the Niger Delta. The transfer of knowledge would ensure the sustainability of the initiative and create a ripple effect that would benefit entire communities.

In addition to the training, participants received high-quality seeds and instructions on improved farming techniques, equipping them with the tools necessary for successful rice cultivation. The training covered various aspects of modern rice farming, including land preparation, pest management, harvesting techniques and efficient processing methods. By incorporating best practices and innovative farming solutions, the program targets increased crop yields and improved profitability of rice farming in the Delta region.

Beyond the immediate benefits of increased rice production, the initiative also has far reaching economic implications. By empowering young farmers with viable skills, the program fosters job creation, reducing unemployment and improving livelihoods in the Niger Delta. Agriculture remains a critical sector for economic development, and initiatives like this provide a pathway for sustainable growth.

The NDDC has consistently advocated for policies that support local farmers and chase after food security. With this rice farming training initiative, the NDDC is taking proactive steps toward self sufficiency in food production and economic empowerment of the youth.

This initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable agriculture and food security in the region. By equipping young farmers with essential skills and resources, the NDDC is not only enhancing food production but also ensuring that the agricultural sector remains a valuable source of economic growth and development in the Niger Delta.
