By Cecilia Uzoigwe

The Hilltop Residential area in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has been affected by persistent power outage problems, leaving students frustrated and affected. Our correspondents interviewed some of the residents, who are mostly students, to hear their thoughts and how they have been able to cope with this long standing issue.

Q: How has the light issue affected your academic performance?

A: “The light issue in Hilltop is a nightmare. We’ve been without light for weeks, and it’s affecting our studies. We can’t even charge our phones or laptops.”- Joshua, first year student.

A: “I’m tired of living in darkness. The residents should provide a reliable source of light. This light issue is causing a breakdown on schedule. This is a student area, and we need to read, but due to the lack of electricity, the first thing that comes to your mind is where to charge my phone early in the morning, making my day so disorganized.”- Brown, a resident of Hilltop.

A:. “The light issue is a security risk. We’re vulnerable to attacks and robberies at night. The residents need to fix this problem ASAP. The light issue has made me unsettled. Moving from Hilltop to Odenigwe just to charge my phone and laptop to do my project is really stressful. We went for a peaceful protest last two weeks, and they assured us of the light up till now, there’s no light.” – Chinelo, a resident.

A: “I’m a student of Civil Engineering, and I need light to study. The constant power outages are affecting my academic performance. I urge the school authorities to take immediate action.”- Eze Chimaobi, 300L.

These students’ voices echo the sentiments of many in the Hilltop area. Will the authorities listen and take action to address this pressing issue?
