The Lagos State government welcomed a new fish commercial farming on Feb. 27, 2025 in Lekki, Lagos. This government-backed project is expected to supply fresh fish to urban markets while creating jobs and promoting sustainable aquaculture practices.

“This fishery farm is a significant step towards reducing our reliance on imported fish and ensuring that Lagosians have access to fresh, locally produced seafood.” stated Dr. Ifeanyi Okoro, Lagos state agriculture commissioner during the launch ceremony of the farm. The facility, which spans over 15 hectares, is equipped with modern aquaculture technology including recirculating water systems and automated feeding stations designed to optimize fish growth and improve operational efficiency.

Local fish farmers have welcomed the initiative, noting that the new project will provide valuable training and technical support to enhance their production capabilities. Adewale Ogunleye, a veteran fish farmer stated that, “It is a win to win for our community to now have the opportunity to learn from advanced practices and increase our output, ensuring steady supplies of seafood to local markets.

Officials also highlighted plans to expand the project further in the coming months, with additional investments earmarked for upgrading storage facilities and improving transportation networks to streamline distribution across Lagos and neighboring states.
